After our newsletter about trying to figure out SoliaVenture’s identity, we received this message from a reader:
I enjoy reading the newsletter updates. Quick note as I browsed the website, just be aware of using copyright characters like Bluey. I just did a quick search regarding that and it may be better to develop unique characters for the brand. 💕💕💕
She was talking about these cards:

People love them.
Kids love them. Adults love them. And they sell really well.
Which is exactly why we kept them.
None of what she said was completely new to us. We knew there was a copyright concern. And we knew that using characters created by someone else wasn’t helping us find our own style and identity.
But sometimes you know something without really doing anything about it. 🙈
Then someone else says it at just the right time, and suddenly it clicks.
No matter how much people love our Bluey cards, Bluey will never be ours. So we’ve decided to let those cards go.
(You may still see some at our markets while we use up what we’ve already printed, but they’re coming off our website and we won’t be reprinting them.)
Our reader had another suggestion: explore San Francisco more.
When we think about who we’re selling to—people at markets in San Francisco and local gift stores—creating more San Francisco designs makes a lot of sense.
Our San Francisco cards are some of the very first cards we ever made. And even though we created them a few years ago, they’re still some of our most popular cards.
Our drawing skills have improved quite a bit since then too, and it feels like a good time to create some new ones.
So we’ve started.
We’re working on a new Christmas illustration that combines a local animal with an iconic part of San Francisco.
Any guesses? 👀
We’re really grateful that this reader took the time to look through our website, think about what she saw, do some research, and then write to us.
So please keep the ideas coming. If you see something we could do better, tell us.
Before you go
